Nick Martinez made six starts last year before he was first asked to come out of the bullpen. Then he made two more starts, pitched the last four innings of another game, started twice more and finished the season as a reliever.

His other two starts lasted seven and six innings, respectively, with this one marking the first time he’d thrown seven shutout innings in a game since April 2015 with the Texas Rangers.
