Many parents choose to bed-share with their baby or unintentionally end up doing so 👶 But claudiatanner asks when even the experts can’t agree, how can sleep-deprived parents decide what’s best?
Big Read
I wanted to follow the safety advice by the book and baby Milo was placed on his back, in the same room as me in a side-car crib. For the first four months, he woke every two hours. To say I was exhausted was an understatement. Then, as many others have experienced, I realised my little boob monster slept for longer when I accidentally fell asleep with him next to me in bed.
For years, leading UK SIDS charity The Lullaby Trust warned parents not to co-sleep, but changed its advice in 2019 after a 8,500-strong survey found 76 per cent of UK parents said they shared a bed with their newborn. While it doesn’t exactly promote bed-sharing – its stance is still that the safest place for a baby to sleep for the first six months is in a separate cot or crib in the same room as the parents – it now campaigns for parents to practice safer co-sleeping.
Over 40 per cent said they had fallen asleep on a sofa or armchair with their baby, which can increase the risk of Sids by up to 50 times.Half admitted that they didn’t know how to reduce the risk of SIDS. But in the 90s, paediatricians started giving parents a strong, universal message that bed-sharing was dangerous, after research suggested that Sids was more common in babies who slept in their parents’ bed.
During the mid-80s, strong evidence emerged that front sleeping was linked with a greatly increased risk of Sids. The Lullaby Trust launched the “Back to Sleep” campaign in 1991 which resulted in a staggering decrease in Sids. Research shows the chances of Sids is 50 times higher for babies when they sleep on a sofa or armchair with an adult. This could be due to overheating and they are also at risk of suffocation as they can easily slip into a position where they are trapped and cannot breathe.
in 2005 came to a similar conclusion, maintaining that “there is only strong evidence for a risk among infants of smoking mothers and some evidence of a risk among young infants of non-smoking mothers”.
