ANAHEIM, Calif. — After three innings spent alternating awful offensive execution and elite relief, a sinking liner ended an excruciating stretch of extra innings. Angels nine-hole hitter Matt Duffy sent a shallow fly ball to center field.
The Angels struck four hits in 12 innings but somehow squeaked out a 2-1 victory against the Astros. Duffy’s bloop single accomplished what Houston failed to do for three extra innings: score the automatic runner in scoring position.The Astros advanced him to third base in all three frames. None came home. With Jose Altuve at third and one out, Alex Bregman struck out looking during the 11th in a particularly painful at-bat.
Chas McCormick flew out on the next pitch, producing more misery in extra frames full of them. Manager Dusty Baker stayed away from injured designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, who remained on the active roster despite his hand injury and deprived Baker of a roster spot he could have used to maneuver the extra innings.
Before it got there, two-way Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani threw a season-high 111 pitches across eight innings of one-run ball. He navigated Houston’s lineup with no run support, settling into a duel with resurgent Astros righthander Luis Garcia.
