Astros' Luis Garcia matched Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani frame for frame in the...

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 03: Luis Garcia #77 of the Houston Astros pitches in the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on September 03, 2022 in Anaheim, California. ANAHEIM, Calif. — His body felt bad and his pregame bullpen session was, by his own admission, “horrible.” Still, Luis Garcia maintained the buoyant demeanor that can become infectious. Wiping a smile off Garcia’s face is difficult.

If Saturday’s results are any indication, the Astros may ask their perpetually positive righthander to repeat his pitiful pregame routine. Garcia lowered his ERA to 3.99. It had not been under four since Aug. 6. Garcia controlled all but one Angel. Leadoff man David Fletcher struck two doubles against him. Only three other baserunners reached in the seven frames he worked.

“That’s the best game he’s thrown in a while,” manager Dusty Baker said. “Him and Vázquez were on the same page. He didn’t make many mistakes. The walk is what hurt him, but he was good. He was excellent.”
