Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had a series of one-on-one meetings with Republicans on Capitol Hill today and got a less-than-warm reception
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg received some harsh messages from lawmakers as he made the rounds in Congress on Thursday, holding a series of one-on-one meetings with Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley, a top tech industry critic.
A Facebook spokesperson said that Zuckerberg's remarks to Hawley were about the "perception of bias" in Silicon Valley, and that "he went on to say it is something about which we need to be aware." Lawmakers of both parties have increasingly floated the idea of revising Section 230 to force internet giants like Facebook, Twitter and Google to take more active measures to police their platforms. While Democrats primarily want the social media giant to get rid of disinformation and hate speech, Republicans have dangled the prospect of weakening the liability protection if Facebook doesn't end political "censorship.
"I think he understands that self-regulation isn't going to [work]," said Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee. "The days of the Wild West in terms of not just Facebook but all these enterprises can't continue." It's Zuckerberg's first trip to Capitol Hill since his high-profile, marathon testimony to Congress last year about the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. Since then, the company has come under even more government scrutiny over its handling of consumer data, online content and business practices.
