After a rousing performance of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the New York Philharmonic on on Feb. 28, celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma returned to the stage for an encore.
In a telephone interview, Ma said his aim was to remind people of their shared humanity at a time when there is so much strife and suffering in the world, including in Ukraine.Ma is now touring with pianist Kathryn Stott, who together recorded the 2020 album “Songs of Comfort and Hope” in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their tour stoops ThursdayApril 6 at the Conrad in La Jolla.
“How many of us think about World War I or World War II?” he said. “How many of us think about Rwanda or about the Rohingya? These all become distant very quickly in our first world. But for people in other parts of the world, it’s constant, it doesn’t go away.” Casals, regarded as one of the greatest cellists of all time, fled Spain in the late 1930s, saying he would not return until democracy was restored. Living in the French border town of Prades, he worked to raise money for refugees of the Spanish Civil War, writing letters to officials, charities, journalists and others seeking support.
