While at sxsw, we spoke with NorthernComfort director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson and stars Simon Manyonda, Ella Rumpf, and Sverrir Gudnason about how their film tackles human foibles through the fear of flying:
Icelandic filmmaker Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson's Northern Comfort, his first English language project, had a successful premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival earlier this month. Co-written with Halldór Laxness Halldórsson and Tobias Munthe, the high-flying comedy follows a group of characters whose fear of flying lands them on a special course with the final destination of Iceland.
There was a turning point in this development process when I decided to make it in English. Originally, it was written about a group of Icelanders flying to Germany, but then somebody suggested, “Why don't you turn it around and make it about the group of people coming to us?” I thought, “Yeah, that's actually much better. It's much more intense.” It was in 2018 when I started working with my two co-writers on the script.
Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson: I also want to mention that Ella was very brave to jump in because there was another actress that got COVID, and she couldn't travel. She got very sick, so I actually had a Zoom meeting with Ella after the first day of shooting. She has COVID while in Paris, but luckily we managed to bring her to Iceland on day 4.
Simon Manyonda: I joined the project through an audition, but when I read the script, I was surprised that his character carried on. I thought that, after we first meet him, he's going to disappear. But he carries on, and I just felt that was a truism of the film. It really excited me, and made me want to play the part.
I did not know that you could take a course to overcome a fear of flying, so this was news to me. Did you actually do research into that to be accurate, or was it more about finding the comedic and dramatic themes? On that note, how do you walk the line between the pathos that you feel for these characters and then the absurdity of the situation that they're in?
Ella Rumpf: I think it went very quickly. I arrived on Saturday night, and I was taken into a beautiful, already-created family in seconds. They just included me in a very beautiful way, and I felt like I never had so much fun doing a film.
