Awful news in from overnight
Fire crews rescued a woman who got intro trouble in water near Centenary Bridge in Leeds. The rescue took place during the early hours of Sunday morning.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a female in difficulty in water near the bridge, which crosses the River Aire. Emergency throw lines were used by a member of the public on the scene but the woman was unable to exit the water unaided. Water rescue teams were mobilised to the scene at 12.55am. They pulled the woman from the water using a rescue sled.The woman was conscious and breathing and was placed in the care of Yorkshire Ambulance Service after she was saved. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust is reminding people to be careful around open water during the hot weather.
Dr Steven Dykes, the trust's executive medical director, said: "It may be very appealing to jump into the water to cool off on a warm summer’s day, but people need to be aware of how dangerous it really is. Water can look calm on the surface, but may contain unseen debris and have treacherous undercurrents.
"Also, the temperature of deep water is much colder than people would expect it to be and rarely gets above freezing. Every year, lives are tragically lost across the UK and we don’t want to see anyone hurt or injured, so please stay out of open water and stay safe.”
