From riding the 'Smartie Tube' to paying your bus fare with a Saverstrip - all while smoking

Shoulder pads, leggings, yuppies, video nasties, Duran Duran, the ZX Spectrum and Bullseye on ITV on Sunday afternoon. But what was Leeds in the 1980s like?

1. Pay your bus fare with a Saverstrip Before the days of contactless payment, you could buy a card with 10 prepaid fares called a Saverstrip. When you boarded the bus you would insert the card into a purpose-designed machine which would clip off one of the fares arranged in a vertical strip. It closed to all but public transport vehicles in 1993 and to all vehicles in 1996. Try it now and you're likely to be arrested.

5. Shop at Woolworths A British institution – that paradoxically began in the US – was Woolworths, an everyman's compact department store. It was best known for its pop singles and pick and mix, sometimes dubbed the 'nick and mix' if you were light-fingered. The Dutch chain left the UK in 2001 and the building which housed it was knocked down in 2009. Part of the Trinity Shopping Centre now stands in its place.

9. Go drinking underage Pubs, bars and clubs – as they should be – are strict these days on checking their punters are over the age of 18. Back in the 1980s, it was perfectly possible to go boozing in certain licensed premises if you had a fake ID card, although sometimes even that wasn't necessary. It was also possible to send your tall mate into an off-licence if he or she could pass for 18.
