Swiss women have had enough. Here'd what's behind the wave of protests over pay equality, sexual violence and the patriarchy
In Switzerland, on June 14, all over the country, women went on strike. The quiet, peaceful and well-organized nation was overwhelmed by a purple wave of protesters demanding pay equality, the end of sexist and sexual violence, and the fall of patriarchy.
Switzerland is a peculiar country when you try to assess where it stands in terms of gender equality. On the one hand, women have been kept away from suffrage until 1971 ; on the other hand, five women have already been head of state—neither France nor the U.S. can match such achievement. Today, there are three women in the team of seven governing the country, that is almost 43% in the highest office, but only 15% of the Swiss senators are female.
But on top of those obstacles, that are the same everywhere, Swiss women suffer from a still prevailing traditional perception of gender roles. They are seen as potential mothers and mothers are expected to dedicate themselves to their children. 60% of mothers of young children work fewer hours than part-time.
