Somehow, the singer’s reputation withstood a brief marriage to a teenager in the ’90s and a video of him seemingly having sex with a different minor in the early-aughts that resulted in child-pornography charges.
All of which more or less serves as background for the trial at hand, which focuses primarily on the creation of Kelly’s alleged sex cult. These allegations largely echo DeRogatis’s 2017 report that, once Kelly lured them to his homes, the girls and women he targeted were kept largely in isolation and in thrall to his sexual whims. They “were not permitted to leave their room without receiving permission … including to eat or go to the bathroom,” prosecutors say.
The bribery charge pertains to the late singer Aaliyah , who married Kelly in 1994, when she was 15 and he was 27. Prosecutors allege that he bribed an Illinois government official into making her a fake ID, and that Kelly married her because she was pregnant. The pair may have begun having sex when Aaliyah — whose career Kelly helped launch, producing her first album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, and writing the title track — was 13.
What’s this about attorney-client chaos? Earlier this summer, two members of Kelly’s longstanding legal team moved to quit the case, citing inter-lawyer disputes. Steve Greenberg and Michael Leonard departed in early June, aggravated by two relative newcomers who wanted a more prominent role in the courtroom. “It’s unfortunate because these other people are clueless,” Greenberg told the New York Times of Kelly’s alleged refusal to meet with him on the matter. “But that’s his choice.
