Inspiring Hammers coach is of the opinion that their recent stunning Europa League Conference success can be the start of much bigger things for the east end club
A delighted Nevin took time out from his recent England duties, to share what the victory means to the club, the future and his own ambitions.I think that’s the perfect word. It’s a platform, it’s a reset after possibly a bit of a disappointing Premier League season. I think the way that we felt on that trip back, the way that we felt leaving that stage with the parade, when we came back, we’re really looking forward to that Europa League challenge again.
Putting football aside, you can see how the success unifies communities. There was every creed, faith, age, represented along those pavements. It was a testament to the community, how they back their team, and it gave us a sense of what it really did mean.I think it is part of my role to almost play devil’s advocate sometimes. Obviously, I agree with a lot of things that he wants to do and obviously it works, but I think it’s my duty sometimes to give an alternative view.
With your profile, which has obviously been raised with the recent success, do you understand that you give hope to aspiring coaches? It’s never going to be an easy step-by-step ascendancy. It is a tough road, you have got to be prepared for difficulties, but you also need to get the opportunities that you are due, and that is where I feel that there’s a shortfall, there isn’t that opportunity at the top level.
I’ve learned from being in the game so long that things change really, really quickly. I’m always as humble as I can be and prepared for the next opportunity whenever that may be, so I don’t know.
