Vogue brings you a first look at Vespertine, the vintage-inspired brand cooked up by a former Raey designer and a Saint Laurent muse.

Vespertine also reflects the two friends’ other shared passion besides live music: vintage fashion. “I’ve always been mad for vintage,” says Sumner, laughing as she describes how she and Close would trawl stores for pre-loved gems and practically lived in one another’s wardrobes while sharing a flat in London a few years back.

“Sustainability is really important to both of us,” adds Close, whose work with Amanda Johnston, curator at the Sustainable Angle, has helped to inform the approach to their brand, which the duo says is designed to “share together and wear forever”. It’s also what inspired the new label’s cheeky USP: silk knickers , all made using offcuts of fabric from the blouses – an ingenious way to limit waste. “The idea just came up in conversation,” Close says now.

Vespertine’s co-founders, model Lili Sumner and designer Katy Close, used to live together in London.Though Vespertine will ultimately expand beyond blouses, Close and Sumner are focused squarely on key wardrobe pieces. “It’s really important to us not to be trend-based,” says Lili, who has been capturing their friends and fellow creatives wearing Vespertine for what will become an ongoing video-portrait series. “My best friend could wear it, but my mum could, too.

The co-founders are looking forward to revealing an “even more fun side” to Vespertine come October, when they will unveil a party collection with a focus on dresses. “The vibe is sensual and exciting, which we felt we were in need of after living in sweats in lockdown,” Close says. “It will always be driven by [dressing for the] evening.
