The UK's largest untapped oil and gas field, Rosebank, has become a 'lightning rod' for criticism, and encapsulates a broader row over new fossil fuel projects in the North Sea. The go-ahead for development there could single-handedly derail the UK's emissions targets, opponents argue.
The UK's largest untapped oil and gas field has been given the green light by the government's North Sea Transition Authority , defying climate warnings about the damage from new fossil fuel projects.
Rosebank's"immense size, its location relative to marine protected areas, and the threat it poses to the climate have made it a lightning rod for criticism", she said.An NSTA spokesperson said after announcing the decision on Wednesday:"We have today approved the Rosebank Field Development Plan which allows the owners to proceed with their project.
Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, all countries agreed to limit global heating to ideally 1.5C above pre-industrial levels to avoid severe damage to human health and nature. But the IEA also forecasts global demand for oil to keep growing until at least 2028.
