In shadow of Uvalde massacre, Hondo council cancels NRA fundraiser, gun raffle
Ana Rodriguez, mother of Maite Rodriguez, one of 19 children who died in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, embraces Angel Garza, whose stepdaughter, Amerie Jo, also died. They were celebrating the Hondo City Council’s decision on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, to not allow an NRA-sponsored event that would have included a raffle of one or more assault weapons to be held on city property.
“My daughter’s dirt hasn’t even settled in her grave yet,” he told reporters, cradling a framed color photo of the girl. The session Monday night revisited the lease deal a little more than nine weeks after Salvador Ramos, the Robb Elementary gunman, killed 19 children and two teachers, making it the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history. He was able to legally purchase his rifle despite having a troubled history well known to his family, friends and some acquaintances.
“Denying the rights of legal, law-abiding organizations and individuals is not the answer,” he added. Roughly two dozen others were outside, alternately cheering, jeering and yelling while holding handmade placards saying, “Cancel NRA Fundraiser” and “Children Are More Important Than Guns.” Angel Garza got into a brief shouting match with a pro-NRA speaker before being escorted by police from the chamber.
Angel Garza, stepfather of Amerie Jo Garza, who was one of 19 children killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, is escorted out of a Hondo City Council meeting after interrupting a supporter of a proposed NRA-sponsored event in Hondo to tell him that he is insensitive to the feelings of family members whose children died, during a Hondo City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022.
