I love making things from scratch. But that love wanes when the amount of time, effort, and money that goes into the process results in something that isn’t that much better than what I can buy ready made. For example, I’ve never had a homemade bagel I thought was better than something I could get at a good bagel shop. Making bagels is not easy . I’ve found that nondairy milk can fall into this category as well: Making it can be cumbersome and expensive and result in a gritty drink.
But unlike other nondairy milk-making devices I’ve seen, the Milkmade claims it can remedy all those pain points. The Milkmade requires no presoaking, uses around ⅛ cup of nuts per 20 ounces of liquid, produces no pulp, and cleans itself. If it could do all that, it might be enough to convert this dubious nut milk maker. But I wouldn’t know for sure unless I tried it myself.The Milkmade is similar to a conventional countertop coffee maker in design.
To make a batch of milk, you first fill up the back with water, and deposit your ingredients into the grinding compartment. Once you’ve done that, you select your settings on a touch menu. There are six preset settings: almond, macadamia, soy, oat, cashew, and coconut. However, you can make milk out of more than these six options, it just requires some tinkering with the timing on your end. You then select between 10- or 20-ounce sized, and press start.
One thing to note, the milk comes out very, very hot. If you are someone who likes cold milk in their coffee, you need to make the milk the night before and pop it in the fridge. Immediately after the milk making is finished, the machine begins to clean itself, and whirrs for 7 more minutes before dispensing the waste water and shutting off. I found the milk making part took next to no effort at all. I was also pleased to see how well the cleaning function worked.
