SAN ANTONIO — Shirley Guzman and her sister, Debra, came to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery only a few days after burying their dad.“My dad was a proud Army veteran,” said Shirley Guzman, 57, of San Antonio, “so this was a tribute to him.”

“I always wanted to come, and my group invited me to come with us,” Lozano, 74, said, adding he hadn’t been here before because of transportation problems. “All my family are veterans — Army, Air Force, Marines. We lost all of our friends.” “The units were created after the Civil War, and Buffalo Soldier regiments served our nation for close to 90 years, which provided an opportunity for African Americans to lead and excel,” he continued. “Though they often faced the challenges of discrimination, the Buffalo Soldiers still earned their reputation for selfless service and courage while participating in every conflict during their era.
