Vincent T. Davis and Billy CalzadaSAN ANTONIO — The sacrifice and service of the nation’s veterans inspired this Veterans Day photo retrospective. Unfortunately, we can’t feature each story of those who served in the military, but we would like to offer views from some of San Antonio’s veterans who served in the Vietnam War, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
This project is near and dear to photojournalist Billy Calzada. The very first veteran portrait he ever made was of his father, T/5 or Corp. Guillermo M. Calzada, who served in the Army during World War II at the Battle of Guadalcanal. All of his veteran portraits since have featured the same style that Calzada called “a form of emergence photography, as if coming out of the darkness.”
“America’s veterans are among our greatest treasures because of their knowledge, experience and wisdom,” he said. Calzada invited staff writer Vincent T. Davis, an Air Force veteran, to help honor veterans who remind him of his great-grandfather, retired Army MSgt. Theodore H. Martin, who served during World War II and the Korean War.
Through decades fraught with turbulence and change, one constant has remained — the military service of the nation’s men and women. This tribute honors veterans, active-duty military members and their families for their dedicated service.
