Carole Forman never thought she’d be a runner. But a challenge from her son-in-law changed everything.
As Carole Forman was getting ready to leave Switzerland—where she had been visiting her daughter, JulieAnne Dietz, for about a month earlier this year—there was one thing she had left to do before the flight back to the States: get a run in.
Forman, 66, and Dietz had been running every day for the duration of the visit. The mountain paths were tough compared to her native Long Island, New York, but Forman employed the strategy she’s used since the very first run in January 2014—and every single day since then.. “I have a goal of doing 1,000 miles total this year. But in terms of each run, my goal is to feel better when I come back compared to when I leave, and that always happens.
For the first six decades of her life, Forman never envisioned that she’d be saying that. While she enjoyed being active, she was never a runner, though JulieAnne sweet-talked her into the occasional short run. Then, her son-in-law, Mark Dietz, heard aboutand challenged her to try it along with him and JulieAnne, kicking it off with the first day of 2014.
“I’m blaming this all on him,” Forman said. “He missed a day early on, so he was out. But [JulieAnn and I] kept going. It was something we enjoyed doing together, and with the grandkids.” During the first year, both she and JulieAnne were running a mile every day, and in year two, they bumped it up to two miles a day. Forman considers that amount as her baseline; some days she’ll run three miles or more so that she can be “lazy” on especially windy or cold days and drop back to just a mile if necessary.
