The city boasts six housing tax credit developments for seniors.
They currently live at Plano’s The Savannah at Gateway development, a housing tax credit community for adults who are 55 and older. While his rent at the development is income-based, Moses said they have struggled to pay the $1,300 monthly rate. He said a social worker at the Wellness Center for Older Adults in Plano paid two months worth of their rent to preserve their stay at the apartment, which is close to where Moses receives dialysis treatment.
“I went from making $60,000 a year down to less than $30,000,” said Thompson, who is divorced and said she misses living in Plano, but had no choice but to move.Jim Sherrard, 73, lost his wife of 43 years to ALS four years ago. He said rent at his apartment went up 5%. He predicts that in three to four years, he’ll have to make some tough decisions about his housing situation.
At Plano independent living facility Preston Place, for example, the 2023 monthly rent for a 650 square-foot, one-bedroom apartment starts at $1,860. For a 720 square-foot, one-bedroom apartment the rent jumps to $2,350 each month. “Once I pay [rent] and once I pay my electric bill, and once I buy some food and some gas and some insurance and [pay] a few credit card bills, … I don’t have a dime left,” Moses said. “I mean, not one dime left.”Six housing tax credit properties in Plano — Evergreen at Plano, Gala at Premier, The Plaza at Chase Oaks, The Savannah at Gateway, Tuscany Villas at Chase Oaks and Villas of Mission Bend — are designated solely for seniors.
