The very first Airbnb listing featured three inflated airbeds on a San Francisco living room floor. Eleven years later, you can now rent an entire island with its own time zone for about $1 million a week.
Welcome to Airbnb Luxe, the upscale new service that the company revealed on Tuesday, which aims to tempt the 1% and shake up the $200 billion luxury travel market the way its basic home and vacation rental business has disrupted the hospitality industry. Airbnb Luxe features more than 2,000 “handpicked homes,” according to the press release, which have each met more than 300 criteria The homes are described as destinations unto themselves, and include:
Each luxury listing has its own “dedicated trip designer” on call 24/7 who can tailor the dream getaway to the guests’ particular needs. That includes arranging child care, private chefs and personal training sessions, as well as coordinating the booking and check-in, and arranging local tours, experiences and activities.
The company claims that the number of Airbnb bookings for listings worth at least $1,000 per night increased more than 60% last year. And the brand has been upgrading its accommodations for the past few years, such as adding packages like Airbnb Experiences and Airbnb Adventures .The company began offering Airbnb Plus and Beyond by Airbnb last year after buying the luxury vacation rental site Luxury Retreats in 2017 to add more upscale listings to its roster of 4.
