The fallacies of price-fixing are much the same today as they were in Diocletian’s time
Successive emperors, struggling to fund a costly army and protection money owed to menacing neighbours on the back of wobbly tax receipts, landed on the seemingly clever fiddle of reducing the silver content of state-issued coinage. The Romans were experimenting with macro-economics on a scale not previously possible in human history, and so they might be forgiven for blundering unknowingly into the economic, political and moral risks of currency debasement. Those who learn a lesson first often have to do so the hard way, and they deserve our gratitude for the insights offered by their experiences.
