Officers from Salt Lake County’s officer-involved critical incident task force are investigating the shooting. The department will hold a news conference to discuss the shooting at 3 p.m. Saturday, officials announced.
Officers responded to a residence at 11 p.m. Friday near 4400 South 2200 West on a report of a man with self-inflicted injuries who was reported to be suicidal. The homeowner placed the call to authorities, police said in a news release, and officers were told that the suicidal man suffered from a post-traumatic stress disorder and possibly schizophrenia.
Police were confronted by the man upon arrival to the residence, and at some point, the man threatened police with scissors and a “large, bowie-type knife.” Officers responded with a “number of less-lethal tools” before firing their weapons, according to the release. Two officers shot their weapons, officials said, but it is not immediately known how many rounds were fired or what specifically occurred prior to the officers firing their weapons. Three other officers were also on the scene at the time.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition but his name was not released by authorities. The homeowner and the 35-year-old man were the only two home at the time of the incident, officials said. The shooting marked the fifth police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
