Brainiac is one of Superman's most popular supervillains, constantly threatening the DC Universe. However, he actually deserves to be much more of a Supergirl villain.
While Brainiac is one of Superman's greatest rivals, DC's most dangerous Coluan may actually be a more personal villain against Supergirl. It's fair to say Kara understands threats against the endangered Kryptonian culture since she grew up there. Even though Superman knows Brainiac and fights him on a regular basis, Kara grew up on Argo City and witnessed one of Brainiac's deadliest attacks firsthand.
Kal-El and Kara Zor-El are undoubtedly the most famous cousins in DC Comics. Although they haven't had many chances to bond in contemporary comics, especially in Supergirl's more modern stories, the two often share a wholesome relationship.
Injustice 2 loosely adapts Supergirl and Krypton's tragic incident with Brainiac. The trauma Kara went through as a child perfectly sets up some emotional and heart wrenching moments, granting writers more possibilities at making Brainiac an engaging character. Because Superman is a twisted/evil version of himself in the Injustice universe, it's easier to interpret Kara as Brainiac's primary rival. Brainiac constantly gets recognized as a"Superman villain.
In recent years, Supergirl has become more independent from Superman and his supporting characters, especially in her more self-reliant Arrowverse portrayal. While it's inspiring to see Kara flourish into her own character, it's a shame she lost some of her closest connections to Superman and his corresponding DC characters, like the Justice League or Brainiac. The Coluan is someone who would pack a bigger punch as a Supergirl villain in the first place. .
