The Sea Devils are back, and this cool piece of fan art celebrates their DoctorWho history, from Pertwee to Whittaker 😲👏👏👏
An incredible piece of Doctor Who fan art pays tribute to the history of one of the series most iconic recurring threats, the Sea Devils. Incumbent Doctor Jodie Whittaker is set to bow out of the role in an upcoming special this autumn, which will coincide with the BBC’s centenary celebrations. Before that, however, the Thirteenth Doctor will star in a penultimate adventure, “Legend of the Sea Devils,” that sees the return of one of an iconic monster from the classic series.
Introduced in the 1972 serial “The Sea Devils,” under the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, the Sea Devils were a marine race that ruled the Earth centuries before humanity and allied themselves with the Doctor’s rival time lord, the Master, to reconquer the planet. They weren’t seen again until the 1984 serial “Warriors of the Deep,” in which they partnered with their aquatic cousins, the Silurians, to take control of nuclear missiles from an underwater military colony.
Here's a sneak preview of the finished art for an upcoming issue of Celestial Toyroom. @ianwheeler_who @DWASonline pic.twitter.com/Zy1pvJsmIyThe piece is a stunning work of art and highlights the key moments in the series for one of the show’s most iconic villains.
While not many details are known about the next Doctor Who special, showrunner Chris Chibnall has a reputation for being an effective writer for legacy villains, so hopes are high that those talents will benefit the Sea Devils. While their debut story is generally thought of as a solid entry to the Pertwee era, “Warriors of the Deep” is widely regarded as one of the worst stories of the classic series.
