A new study shows users can be primed to believe certain things about an AI chatbot’s motives, influencing their interactions with the chatbot.

Participants individually interacted with a conversational AI mental health chatbot for about 30 minutes to determine if they would recommend it to a friend.

As human beings, we rely on recommendations or warnings from our friends and family. It gives us an added perspective on what to expect from a particular service, a product, or another human being.

They found that the participants who were told that the AI is empathetic tended to believe that notion and also gave the chatbot a higher rating than those who believed it was desensitized and manipulative. While most people who were told the AI was malicious believed that it was, less than 50% of these people chose to see the good in the AI and thought that the chatbot wasn’t malicious.
