), and Rishi Sunak going after “rip-off degrees” show that while we love to consume content, we are loathe to invest in people.
In this world of unpaid internships, barely-paid creative gigs and late-paid invoices, there’s the sense that if you choose the life of an artist, you’re doing it for the joy of it – you should be prepared to forfeit fair pay for a sense of fulfilment. Business and pleasure do not mix! But this obscures the fact that even when you love what you do, it still takes effort, discipline, and showing up on days when you’d rather roll over.
Struggle and poverty make better art – or so the mantra goes. Realistically, the exclusion of art from what we deem deserving of fair pay, means the exclusion of working-class and marginalised artists from creative careers. It also means impoverishing the arts and the social imagination in general, since only the middle classes and above can reasonably participate.
Alongside the romanticisation of the artist’s struggle, there’s also the pervading idea that art is a luxury: proficiency in Stem subjects or vocational abilities like plumbing or electrical engineering are necessary, valuable skillsets. And artistic ability is… cute. But a life without art and entertainment would be quite unbearable to most.
