Houston Texans cornerback Steven Nelson celebrates his interception against Tennessee Titans in the first half of game action at NRG Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2022 in Houston.Cornerback was once the Texans’ greatest defensive weakness. The position is now the unit’s greatest strength. Steven Nelson, a 29-year-old veteran who spent last season with the Eagles, is one of the NFL’s highest-performing cornerbacks as he prepares to face his former team on Thursday night at NRG Stadium.

Nelson ranks fifth among all cornerbacks in opponent quarterback rating , according to Pro Football Focus. He’s been targeted 28 times and surrendered just 16 receptions, and he recorded his first interception with the Texans against the Titans on Sunday. Nelson snagged a pass attempt over the middle from rookie quarterback Malik Willis and returned the pick to the Titans 11.

The Texans signed Nelson on a two-year, $9 million contract, and the deal is becoming one of the better acquisitions made in general manager Nick Caserio’s tenure. The rebuilding franchise desperately needed to improve at cornerback after surrendering the third-highest rate of explosive pass plays in 2021.

Nelson and No. 3 overall pick Derek Stingley Jr. have paired to significantly reduce Houston’s net yards allowed per pass attempt from 2021 to 2022 . The cornerbacks can supply crucial support against an explosive Eagles offense, whose quarterback, Jalen Hurts, threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-13 victory over the Steelers on Sunday.

The undefeated Eagles run a confounding offensive scheme full of zone reads and run-pass options. A.J. Brown ranks sixth in the NFL with 659 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. Hurts, who has rushed for 303 yards and six touchdowns, can also exploit a Texans defense that ranks last in the NFL with 186 rushing yards allowed per game.
