Critics share their largely negative thoughts on the new Taylor Sheridan espionage series Special Ops: Lioness starring Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Special Ops: Lioness has been slammed by critics for a variety of reasons. The series, which is coming to Paramount+, was created by Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan. It is loosely based on a real organization, following a group of female CIA operatives known as Lioness and one agent in particular who must go undercover and get into the inner circle of a young woman whose father is a suspected terrorist.

Critics have shared their thoughts on the first episode of Taylor Sheridan's Special Ops: Lioness ahead of its premiere on July 23. For the most part, the series is being slammed for wasting a talented cast on stock female characters, overindulging in spy drama tropes, and being propagandistic. Even many of the critics who liked the series and found it thrilling or aesthetically pleasing have also expressed their doubts about one or more of those qualities.

Special Ops: Lioness Could Still Become a Hit Anyway At the time of writing, Rotten Tomatoes has not aggregated an official score for Special Ops: Lioness. Given the tenor of these reviews, it will most likely turn out Rotten, or just over the 60 percent cusp into Fresh territory. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean the show will turn out to be a failure.

When Sheridan’s hit series Yellowstone premiered in 2018, it earned 56 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences gave it 83 percent and the show grew to become one of the most-watched series of the modern era. There are now also a wide variety of Yellowstone spinoffs, including 1883 and 1923 along with multiple upcoming series.

It remains to be seen if Special Ops: Lioness has the same staying power as Yellowstone. However, the prior series proves that a Sheridan show can find its audience and then bring critics along for the ride . However, this new show does see him operating outside his familiar neo-Western vein, so it could potentially not find as much of an audience for that reason as well.
