Smith: As they meet again, nonexistent Texans-Cowboys rivalry could be so much more
Taking down Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys in their inaugural 2002 game remains arguably the Texans' most memorable moment. Unfortunately, the intrastate rivalry has had little juice with the teams only playing every four years.This should be the best rivalry in the greatest state in America.
Houston’s depressing pro football team made news this week by becoming a 17-point underdog, which is the equivalent of 100 points during a crazy NFL season in which 16-3 leads with 4 minutes to go keep producing surreal 17-16 comebacks. Sure, there’s a 1 percent chance that the Cowboys party at Six Flags and forget to show up at the right place. Or Mills literally plays the game of his life, points up at Jones in his billionaire box after throwing a game-winning touchdown in the final seconds, and the 2-10-1 Texans triumphantly return to Houston to receive a Week 14 championship parade.
Our south-north “rivalry” has never been this lopsided. If the Texans lose 45-10 while the Cowboys try to keep up with Philadelphia in the NFC East, serious thought should be given to leaving Lovie Smith and Pep Hamilton in Arlington, whilecreates a “pro-con” list detailing all the reasons why Nick Caserio either should or should not be allowed to return as general manager in 2023.
