There is arguably no more beautiful sight in nature than a rising full moon, which this week dominates the night sky. It makes the stars harder to see, making this time best spent just watching the moon appear in the early evening, then—on Thursday—just after sunset as its rises 100% full. One of the most famous full moons of the year, the “Harvest Moon” is also this year being called a “supermoon,” which is an astrological, not astronmical, term that’s only came to be a popular term this century. Are “supermoons” media nonsense to be dismissed and growled about ? Or are they nothing more than a fine reminder to get outside and look east at dusk for our beautiful natural satellite to appear in a blaze of orange? I know which side I’m on ...
Look southeast after dark and you’ll see a 91%-lit waxing gibbous moon about 3º below the ringed planet, Saturn. What a fabulous time to get out your dusty old telescope!
