Anthony Lewis received an automatic life sentence but will be eligible for parole after 40 years because he was a minor at the time of the slaying.
Dallas County jurors began hearing testimony in Lewis’ trial Monday. Melanie Rasansky, a friend who said she was on the phone with Baker at the time of the shooting, took the stand.“I always say there’s good people and there’s great people, and Leslie is one of the great people,” Rasansky said.Friends told many stories of the ways Leslie Baker offered kindness in all walks of life, from volunteer work and the small business community to her family and social lives.
Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot called the slaying a “tragedy in the truest sense” in a written statement. He said the district attorney’s office is thankful to secure the verdict for Baker’s family, but added that it is not a joyful day. “There is no bringing Leslie back and there is no joy in sending a young person to prison for a minimum of 40 calendar years,” Creuzot said.. He said it’s his belief that the system, at the time of the slaying, “contributed to recidivism as opposed to fostering rehabilitation.”
“I would hope that our new processes going forward from this office, in collaboration with the juvenile department and juvenile judges, will make it less likely that a juvenile can commit the quantity and type of crimes that were brought out in evidence in this trial,” he said in the statement.
