A second incident is adding to hours of delays after a lorry fire caused the M6 in Preston to shut this morning.
A lorry fire closed a stretch of the M6 and M55 in Preston this morning, causing major disruption in the surrounding area. Emergency crews were called to the southbound carriageway of the M6 between J32 for Broughton Interchange and J31A for Longridge. That stretch was fully closed for a number of hours, as were the first three junctions of the M55.
The M55 has full reopened as has part of the M6 but it is still partially closed to allow a complex recovery process to take place. Some six miles of congestion had built up on each motorway and delays of around two hours remain. Six fire engines were initially sent to the scene and photos show huge black plumes of smoke billowed across the motorway at the height of the blaze. Police are asking motorists to be patient as huge delays and queues build in the area.
A second incident, this afternoon, has caused the northbound carriageway to close and all traffic to be temporarily stopped.This is a live blog. Follow our updates below.
