A San Marcos man may face up to 20 years in prison on a hate crime charge for allegedly starting a fire at an Austin synagogue in 2021.
Franklin Barrett Sechriest, 18, of San Marcos, pleaded guilty to starting a fire at the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Austin on Oct. 31, 2021.A San Marcos man faces up to 20 years in prison on a federal hate crime charge stemming from aFranklin Sechriest, 20, pleaded guilty to arson in federal court last week. His sentencing is scheduled for June 23. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
After the the fire started, Sechriest was seen jogging away from the synagogue and toward his vehicle. Arson investigators reported finding burn patterns from a liquid accelerant, a federal complaint said.Courtesy photo Sechriest’s journal contained an entry dated the day of the fire that said, “I set a synagogue on fire.” And journal entries in the days following noted that Sechriest was monitoring reports and tracking the progress of the investigation.
