Carlsbad facility faces possible temporary shutdown as Poseidon struggles to complete $274 million overhaul to meet state environmental regulations
The cost of desalinated water in San Diego is about to dramatically increase, as Poseidon scrambles to meet state environmental regulations for protecting fish and other marine life at its Carlsbad facility.
Critics question costly investments in desalination given declining consumer demand. Supporters say long-term investments will bolster the region against future drought. Poseidon has until September 2023 to complete construction of the new intake system under its permit with the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board. However, the company recently said it won’t be done until the end of 2024.
With the power plant now demolished, it’s up to Poseidon to meet strict rules for protecting ocean life as it sucks in roughly 300 million gallons of seawater a day, pumping up to its $1 billion reverse-osmosis facility on a nearby hill. At the time, environmental groups decried the plant as a “boondoggle,” calling instead for investments in wastewater recycling. They remained just as, if not more, frustrated this week.
