The satellite internet provider said it will work with the Microsoft Airband Initiative to deliver connectivity to 10 million people by 2025
With two new Internet satellites scheduled to launch next year, Carlsbad’s Viasat needs to find customers for all that bandwidth.
Initial work will target certain countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Mexico, Guatemala and the U.S. — followed by Egypt, Senegal and Angola. The Microsoft deal brings “a whole lot to the table in accelerating the number of people that Viasat can serve around the world in a shorter amount of time than we can on our own,” said Evan Dixon, president of Viasat’s Global Fixed Broadband business. “They have relationships around the globe. They help pursue sustainable financing sources, and there will be direct investment and collaboration in the priority countries.
In Brazil, Viasat provides 9 million students and 20,000 schools with Internet access in partnership with telecommunications outfit Telebras. In total, some 60,000 Brazilian health care centers, libraries, public squares and other facilities have been connected.
