In one case, Ticketmaster services charges – which in the US are only revealed at the “final checkout” – raised the price of two $20 seats to $75. That’s a fat $35 in semi-hidden charges on top of the price set by the band. Smith is not the first artist to bash Ticketmaster recently. Last year, Taylor Swift hit out when sales for her new tour descended into chaos. In November, Ticketmaster cancelled the public sale “due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand”. Ticketmaster, Swift said, had been asked: “multiple times if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could”.
Artists have been railing against Ticketmaster for decades. In the 1990s, Pearl Jam announced they were boycotting the company. It almost broke them – going to war with Ticketmaster meant being blacklisted by venues associated with the company.
