Rishi Sunak has dismissed calls for the UK to pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights to deal with Channel crossings – but called on European countries to do more to resolve the crisis
The Prime Minister is expected to announce that he and the French President will work more closely together at the border, intercepting migrants before they cross the Channel in exchange for funding from the British Treasury.
“The other thing I would say is that this is a joint problem. I think it is wrong to characterise it as ‘we are paying someone else to do something else’. This is a shared and joint endeavour to reduce illegal migration more generally, and it’s not just a challenge that the French and ourselves face, it’s a broader European challenge.”
“That is another format, conversations with the EU’s border agency Frontex – that’s another set of dialogue that will happen. And then working with people to do more upstream, particularly in the Mediterranean and elsewhere is also something we need to do.”
