The Prime Minister has met the French President, Emmanuel Macron, this morning at the Élysée Palace in Paris, in the first Anglo-French summit for five years. One of Rishi Sunak’s main aims for the meeting will be pushing the French to persuade fellow EU leaders to sign a “returns agreement” which will allow the UK to send failed asylum seekers back to the continent, after hemigrants crossing the English Channel on small boats.
If a wider deal on returning migrants who arrive on English beaches to France is not agreed it could become a major problem for Mr Sunak’s plan to remove migrants who travel to the UK illegally from the country within 28 days.
