Epic '90s nostalgia!

In the 1990s, DC Comics adopted an iconoclastic approach to their classic heroes, either killing them off or replacing them with newer characters.
Tom Hoskisson unveiled the amazing piece in a post on his X profile; Hoskisson calls it “The Reign of the Batmen.” The piece, set high above the Gotham skyline, shows the original Batman in the background. In front of him are four different Bat-themed heroes — each an equivalent to one of the four characters who replaced Superman upon his death.
From right to left, there is a Steel version of Batman, complete with the trademark hammer. Next to him is a gold and purple Cyborg Batman; next to the cyborg is a teenage Batman wearing headphones and sporting a loaded utility belt. Finally, there is an all-black wearing Bat-Hero with a silver helmet–clearly a stand-in for the violent and brutal Eradicator. Hoskisson prefaced the piece by calling it a “palette cleanser.
Nostalgia for the 1990s is a very real thing, and Hoskisson pays tribute to this decade in his new piece. He has cleverly mashed up two of DC’s biggest stories from that decade. Both Knightfall and Reign of the Supermen were defining stories for their respective characters, using replacement heroes to show why the originals were so good in the first place. Knightfall and Reign of the Supermen validated the very characters they were upending, giving them both much-needed energy.
Two of the DC's Biggest '90s Stories Collide Hoskisson’s piece evokes nostalgia for the 1990s by posing the question of what these kinds of Batman characters would look like if Gotham received the same story treatment as Superman. Each of the replacement Batmen is a perfect stand-in for one of the four Supermen. Hoskisson adds flourishes to each of the Batmen, such as the teenager’s headphones, that further connect them to their inspirations.
