Thanos' 90s costume change revealed.
Thanos has left his mark on the Marvel Universe on many occasions, and each time, the message is the same: Thanos is a lone warrior and dealer of death. Thanos proves this throughout many of his iconic storylines, including Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos Quest, and Thanos Wins. However, even in those storylines, he never truly embodied the ‘death-dealing warrior’ better than in one 90s comic, where Thanos received a forgotten costume-change that displayed exactly how he really sees himself.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Upon his introduction in Invincible Iron Man #55 by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, Thanos’ terrifying power and villainous cosmic purpose was made abundantly clear, with every subsequent appearance only reinforcing that point. From killing half of all life in the universe in Infinity Gauntlet to killing all life in the universe in Thanos Wins, Thanos has made it clear that he’s not a villain to be messed with.
Thanos’ 90s Costume Changes Reveals He Sees Himself As A Samurai In 1994’s Cosmic Powers #1 by Ron Marz and Ron Lim, Thanos has captured a being known as the Oracle, which is a robot that stores incalculable knowledge. Thanos wants the secrets of the universe that this robot keeps, and to do that, he must venture inside the Oracle’s ‘mind’.
As previously mentioned, Thanos sees himself as a lone warrior and dealer of death, which is something he’s proven time and again. While he lives up to his own idea of himself through his cosmic conquests and dark missions across the galaxy, this 90s costume boils that idea down to its rawest form.
It’s not very often that Thanos gets a costume change - indeed, he has basically been wearing the same thing since Invincible Iron Man #55 - which makes this rare alteration to his look that much more fascinating, as this forgotten 90s costume seemingly reveals how Thanos really sees himself, and while it’s a bit funky, it’s surprisingly on-point.
