She’s already gotten attention from stars like Beyoncé and JorjaSmith, and she’s only in her second year of school.
, who use imperfect handiwork and mixed materials as a means to create wearable yet statement-making garments. McCosker says that she “admires real clothing.” She adds: “I hate seeing people in thin polyester tops. I love patterns, color, heavy fabric, texture, and putting it all together. There’s a feeling to handmade clothes that you just don’t get with much of what you buy today.” McCosker is also passionate about using upcycled and recycled materials in her designs.
Her first full collection, titled Birds Don’t Float, was inspired by a woman she saw who was running a market stall in South Africa. McCosker used fabric that her grandmother recently found and gave to her. “She’s had it in her cupboard since the 1960s,” the designer explains. “It included floral denim and African waxed cotton printed with the queen’s face—my grandmother bought it during the queen’s silver jubilee.
Fashion Month has certainly been filled with young talents to watch thus far, those like Collina Strada, Charlotte Knowles, and Supriya Lele, and McCosker isn’t far behind them. She also represents a relatively new phenomenon of young creatives who are still in their early years of school but have a keen focus on their future and the future of their labels. For now, McCosker is focusing on her next collection, her schoolwork, and networking with people in the industry both online and off.
