New study in Reproductive Sciences identifies placental diseases as the likely cause for 99% of unexplained pregnancy losses, shedding light on miscarriages and stillbirths. The research suggests that identifying specific placental pathologies could lead to more preventative measures.

By Dr. Liji Thomas, MDSep 21 2023Reviewed by Benedette Cuffari, M.Sc. About one million pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage each year. Additionally, about 20,000 end at or after 20 weeks of pregnancy in stillbirth, with about 50% of these cases unexplained.

Placental disease is often observed in failed pregnancies and may be due to preventable causes in up to 67% of cases. However, these cases do not include dysmorphic chorionic villi as a placental abnormality. Related StoriesThe placental tissue from each case was examined to identify any abnormality. About 92% of these tissues were diagnosed with a disease process, which included almost 90% of miscarriages and almost all stillbirths.

Among unexplained stillbirths, one in six had large placentas, 46% of which also had DCVs. DCVs were observed in 31% of unexplained stillbirths and 15% of cord accidents. TIs occurred in about 75% of DCVs, whereas invaginations were reported in 25% of DCVs.

Study suggests link between tear gas exposures and adverse reproductive health outcomesStudy suggests link between tear gas exposures and adverse reproductive health outcomesIn the wake of nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, anecdotal reports of irregular menstrual cycles emerged among protestors who were exposed to tear gas used by law enforcement. Those reports—and the fact that the reproductive health effects of exposure to tear gas and other chemical agents is largely unknown—were the impetus for a new study from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH).
