People with underlying health conditions are at risk of a more severe COVID-19, according to a new CDC report
ome of these conditions have clear links to a higher-risk of severe respiratory infections such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , but others included were conditions with less clear, or no known links such as neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health conditions.
These preliminary findings suggest that in the United States, persons with underlying health conditions or other recognized risk factors for severe outcomes from respiratory infections appear to be at a higher risk for severe disease from COVID-19 than are persons without these condition.
The report also provides new information further confirming that those with underlying health conditions or the elderly are not the only ones at risk from COVID-19. Of patients with data available between the ages of 19 and 64, around 6.5% of them were hospitalized with COVID-19, despite no pre-existing health conditions or risk factors. A further 2% needed admission to ICU.
