Pashion Footwear founder and CEO Haley Pavone and her team created the first fully convertible high heel that turns into a flat in less than five seconds.
Most women can relate to having a love-hate relationship with high heels. They look fantastic. They shape and elongate the leg beautifully and turn any outfit up a few notches. It’s the several-hours-later-factor that can be a real killer. Plain and simple, they hurt! Blisters on the feet and aching backs can quickly become unbearable.
It all began with a night out dancing with friends when a painful inspiration hit her right in the foot. Her high-heel-clad feet began to ache. She did what most do and took her shoes off, only to be impaled in the foot by a friend’s stiletto. This would eventually lead to her creation of the first fully convertible high-heeled shoe.
Her team first presented the concept at Cal Poly’s Annual Elevator Pitch Competition. She won both first and second place. Over the next few months, they developed their first prototype and presented it at the annual Innovation Quest competition, where they took home another first-prize award of $15,000. Not long after, the team was accepted into the SLO HotHouse Summer Accelerator program, an intensive startup boot camp at the university.
Pashion Footwear has its headquarters based in San Luis Obispo, California, out of the Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Hot House Startup Incubator. There is also a satellite office in Portland, Oregon, where the company’s contracted footwear development team work. There are currently two full-time employees, three part-time, five contractors and six board members.
The company is launching with its two signature styles: the"Pashionista" and the"Girl Boss" in coal black. “However, we have several styles and additional colors and materials coming out throughout the next two seasons,” explains Pavone. As for the price point, Goldstein says it may not be an issue since there are two pairs of shoes in one. “Products with additional features, added function and value are doing well in the market. We’ve seen huge success with these types of products over the last few years. For instance, a shoe that is also waterproof, or a handbag that can also be converted and worn multiple ways, have been very popular. These two-in-one products are very appealing to consumers.
