Meet Cuco, the Spanish-Singing, Trumpet-Playing Artist You're Going to Fall Head Over Heels For

'It's cool to have that freedom to create whatever.' Icryduringsex can't be boxed in. We caught up with him before his debut album drop for JuneMusicMonth:

before he ultimately picked Interscope. Nope, his mini-bio reads, “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH / THE PIZZA IS TOO HOT FOR MY MOUTH.”. “But I feel like the only reason I'd probably change is if booking agent or somebody were like, ‘All right, you need to not look like a kid.’”

So what if Cuco, whose real name is Omar Banos, wants to scream about a sizzling piece of cheesy deliciousness? In fact, he’s sort of been like this since he was a kid — he explains that he chose the moniker Cuco because his mom would call him cuckoo when he was younger, thanks to his wild antics and dancing around. And clearly, this type of humor and simply being himself has worked so far for the Southern California native.

Beyond having a sense of humor that has connected him with people all over the world, it’s also his whimsical tunes, feel-good rhythms, and romantic lyrics that have proved him as a musical force to be reckoned with. They’re the perfect tracks to groove alongside a crush or put on during a late night drive. His lyrics often oscillate between English and Spanish, the sort of play that feels natural for lots of youngpeople who know both languages.

Pulling from various genres and inspirations, you can hear the flurry of things that left a mark on Cuco when he was growing up. He’d listen to the music that his mom and dad would put on, including old ballads and Spanish rock, and watch MTV. At about age 8, he became interested in the guitar and during middle school, he picked up other instruments including the drums, bass, and keys.

He’s come a long way since high school and eventually dropping out of Santa Monica City College to chase his music dreams. And while there’s been many, many ups, there have also been some scary moments. While touring last fall, he was involved in a
