Opinion: San Diego's Ash Street settlement leaves many questions that should be investigated [Opinion]
” : The parties quoted in the recent Ash Street article don’t really explain why this matter was seemingly settled cheap and with minimal criminal charges. A judge was in a hurry to end the case, and sent them to another judge? Those are not answers.
I’ve been practicing law for almost 50 years, have settled many cases, tried some, but have never settled a case because a judge pressured me. Judges can cajole, even holler, but the lawyer and client choose to settle or not. The city attorney and district attorney shouldn’t have settled if they weren’t satisfied, but they misdirect blame to the judges. If the settlements weren’t fair, they should have said no. It’s their job.
I’m sure there are those who would like to see this issue laid to rest, especially the politicians who brought forward this toxic real estate deal. With settlement reached, many involved will breathe a sigh of relief. And given the final price tag for Ash Street, there are those who will laugh all the way to the bank at taxpayers’ expense.
