After the four months of inpatient care, I moved into a sober living house and began five months of intensive outpatient services. Union of Pan Asian Communities, a nonprofit organization that provides health and human services to underserved diverse populations, provided financial assistance and helped me pay rent for five months right when the COVID-19 pandemic first began. After that, I got a part-time job at a temp agency and was able to cover my own rent.
If you see someone go unconscious, all you have to do is tear open a box. Each box has two nasal vials, each containing 4 milligrams of naloxone. You can administer both vials to each side of the nose repeatedly until the person wakes up or the paramedics arrive. If those who have overdosed have not stopped breathing completely, Narcan will save their lives — fentanyl can cause all main body functions to shut down and they can die without help.
If it wasn’t for my recovery house and support system, I don’t know where I would have ended up. In my case, the owners know firsthand what we have gone through. They structure the home with a zero-tolerance drug environment. Residents are required to attend three Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings every week. We follow 12-step programs and are encouraged to find a sponsor and then become peer mentors when we are ready.
