MCU star Anthony Mackie reveals that he’s still pushing for a sequel to an underrated 2011 science-fiction movie starring Hugh Jackman.

MCU star Anthony Mackie shares that he's still campaigning for a sequel to Real Steel, Hugh Jackman's underrated science-fiction movie. Released in 2011, Real Steel is directed by Shawn Levy and takes place in the near future when robot boxing has become a popular sport. Jackman stars as ex-boxer Charlie Kenton, who trains a discarded robot to become a champion, while Mackie plays his friend Finn, owner of a boxing club.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In a recent interview with Inverse, Mackie reveals that he's still very much interested in making Real Steel 2 with Jackman. In fact, Mackie says he still calls Levy about the sequel a couple of times a year.

As for Real Steel 2, however, the film would seemingly be a direct continuation of the events of the first movie, with Jackman seemingly open to return. While, in 2016, Levy revealed that coming up with a story idea for the sequel has been challenging, he expressed in 2021 that he would like Real Steel 2 to unite Jackman with Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds wasn't in the first movie, so he would presumably be playing a new character, potentially an ally to Jackman's Charlie, like Finn.

The Real Steel ending provides a fairly strong conclusion in terms of Charlie's character arc and his battle against Tak Mashido , with his robot Atom being labeled the "People's Champion" despite his loss in the ring. While a sequel would perhaps do best to introduce a new antagonist for Charlie and Atom, it could potentially see Mashido return in some capacity after his humiliation.
