Austin Kleba’s path to the Beijing Olympics started before he was 4 years old. From the Elgin Courier-News.

BEIJING, CHINA - JANUARY 31: Austin Kleba of USA in action during a training session at the National Speed Skating Oval before the start of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games on January 31, 2022 in Beijing, China. ** OUTS - ELSENT, FPG, CM - OUTS * NM, PH, VA if sourced by CT, LA or MoD **That’s when the Campton Hills native and St. Charles North High School graduate began skating.

Kleba, 22, and Olympic teammate Ethan Cepuran, 21, a native of Glen Ellyn and a Glenbard West graduate, both initially learned the sport with the Glen Ellyn Speedskating Club. “Austin was always great to coach. He worked really hard, but was also willing to take a step back and skate slower to learn the technique,” said Melissa Koenig, Glen Ellyn Speedskating Assistant Coach and Club Manager.

Ethan Cepuran’s father, Carl Cepuran, at one time coached with the club after another son, Eric, now 36, decided to speed skate when he was just 6 years old. “Ethan started skating when he was really little, like 2, when he followed his older brothers and dad to the rink,” Koenig said. “He is perhaps one of the hardest working athletes I have ever worked with, and he really loves what he does.”
